Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an extra layer of security. It requires not only a username and password but also something only the user has access to, like a physical token or code. This makes it much more difficult for someone to gain access to your account if they manage to steal your login information. It only takes a few minutes to set up two-factor authentication for your FTX account. Keep reading to learn how.

Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication

There are two ways to set up two-factor authentication, using an app like Authy or Google Authenticator or via a physical hardware token. Let's take a look at both methods.

Setting Up 2FA Using an App (Authy)

If you want to use an app for two-factor authentication, we recommend Authy or Google Authenticator. Both are free to download and work with FTX. If you're using an iPhone, we recommend Authy; if you're using an Android phone, we recommend Google Authenticator.

These apps are simple to download and use. As an example, here's how to set up two-factor authentication using Authy:

  1. Download the Authy app and create an account.

  2. Open the FTX website and log in.

  3. Click on your profile picture in the top right corner, then click "Account."

  4. On the left sidebar, click "Security."

  5. Under "Two-Factor Authentication," click "Enable Authy 2FA."

  6. A pop-up will appear with a QR code. Open the Authy app and click "Add Account" at the bottom of the screen.

  7. Select "Scan QR Code." Aim your phone's camera at the QR code on your computer screen and hold it until your camera successfully scans the code.

  8. Enter the 6-digit Authy code from your app into the FTX website and click "Enable Authy 2FA." Contact customer support when something comes up.

Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication Using a Hardware Token

If you prefer to use a physical hardware token for two-factor authentication, such as the YubiKey 5 NFC. You can purchase one from the YubiStore. Once you have your hardware token, setting it up is a breeze:

  1. Open the FTX website and log in to your account.

  2. Click on your profile picture in the top right corner, then click "Account."

  3. On the left sidebar, click "Security."

  4. Under "Two-Factor Authentication," click "Enable YubiKey 2FA."

  5. Plug in your YubiKey to your computer's USB port.

  6. When prompted, press the button on your YubiKey.

  7. A pop-up will appear asking you to confirm that you want to enable YubiKey 2FA. Click "Enable YubiKey 2FA."

  8. You will be prompted to enter your YubiKey PIN. Enter it and click "OK." Reach out to customer service if you encounter a problem.

Managing Two-Factor Authentication

Now that you've set up two-factor authentication, let's look at how to manage it. If you ever need to disable two-factor authentication, simply log in to your FTX account and go to the "Security" tab. Under "Two-Factor Authentication," click "Disable Authy 2FA" or "Disable YubiKey 2FA," depending on which method you're using.

If you lose your phone or hardware token, don't worry. You can still log in to your account. When prompted for the two-factor authentication code, click "Lost your device?" and enter the 6-digit backup code generated when you set up two-factor authentication.

You should always confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled on your account. You can do this by logging in to your account and going to the "Security" tab. If two-factor authentication is enabled, you will see a green "2FA Enabled" next. If not, two-factor authentication is not currently enabled. When you experience any issue, call customer support for assistance.
